It’s been nearly a week since the world learned about the devastation caused by the earthquake in Haiti. Throughout the day on every station you hear and see the pictures of suffering and courage. Being of Caribbean descent myself, and living in New York which has a huge Haitian community, and watching the heartache that many of my close friends are going through trying to reach family members, I feel an overwhelming urge to help too. There are national and international organizations leading the cause of gathering financial donations. But what about the grassroots efforts?
I’m working on a special blog post dedicated to Haiti and how we can help. I am looking for local efforts from various cities, states and countries including NY, Miami, Philly, Boston, LA, London, DC, Paris, the Caribbean and more that detail how folks in those areas can get involved. I am also including national efforts like YeleHaiti, The Clinton Bush Haiti Fund and the Red Cross, but I want to feature more of the grassroots efforts. If you know of an effort or are heading one yourself, please email me with the following info:
- Name of your Organization/Effort
- Location (City, State, Country)
- Contact info (Contact name, email, and phone)
- Summary of what you are doing
You can send your emails to firstname.lastname@example.org and include “HAITI GRASSROOTS EFFORTS” in the subject line.
