Published by Wise Ink, Rice & Rocks brings a unique contribution to the world of children’s literature as it celebrates tradition, culture and diversity. The book tells the story of Giovanni whose friends are coming over for Sunday dinner and he’s embarrassed that his grandmother is serving rice and beans. He does not like “rice and rocks” and worries his friends will think the traditional Jamaican dish is weird. But his favorite Auntie comes to the rescue. She and Giovanni’s pet parrot, Jasper, take him on a magical journey across the globe, visiting places where people eat different versions of rice and rocks—reveling in the varied traditions of different culture while highlighting the delicious similarities that links us together.

The picture book will be released in print and eBook formats on August 16th, 2016 and a special pre-order offer for signed copies is now open on the author’s website. For every five books sold, Sandra will donate one to a children’s literacy organization.

The cover and the book in its entirety features the illustrations of recent Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) grad, Megan Sullivan. Rice & Rocks marks Megan’s first published work.

Sandra L. Richards is the debut picture book author of Rice & Rocks. With Rice & Rock, Sandra brings a unique contribution to the world of children’s books. Sandra, an American-born daughter of Jamaican immigrant parents, hopes the book will serve as an educational resource for families seeking to teach their children the value of their heritage and the importance of cultural diversity.

Sandra is also Executive Director and Head of Diverse and Multicultural Marketing, Wealth Management at Morgan Stanley. Prior to joining Morgan Stanley, Richards served as the Development Officer, Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations for the Jackie Robinson Foundation.

ABOUT MEGAN SULLIVAN (ILLUSTRATOR)

Megan Kayleigh Sullivan graduated from Rhode Island School of Design in 2012 with a degree in Illustration. She is currently working as a freelance illustrator and storyboard artist, and aspires towards a career in the film and animation industry as a concept artist, character designer, or visual development artist (or d., all of the above). Independent Woman Owned Film Company Set to Screen First Documentary, DIE, CRAZY, FAT

NEW YORK, NY—OCTOBER 2, 2014— America is a country obsessed with trends and fads in everything from fashion to beauty to healthy…even religion. According to industry experts, the health and wellness industry is gearing to be a trillion dollar business by 2017 with most of those dollars as a result of female purchasing power. Buona Donna Productions, an independent film company, takes a look at the journey of eight women on their quest to “healthy,” in the riveting new documentary DIE, CRAZY, FAT. Buona Donna will host a private screening on Thursday, October 30th at MIST Harlem in New York City.

“With America’s obsession with diet, exercise and its ever-growing misconceptions, I felt it was vitally important– especially for women– to understand the basics of good health,” said Buona Donna co-Founder, Tonya Conrad. “Faced with my own personal struggles, I wanted to expose the conflicting opinions in the medical and health industries and share insightful anecdotes that would allow others to determine for themselves the true meaning of healthy living; ultimately feeling inspired to take control of their own health.”

Co-founded by Tonya Conrad and Nichole “Nikki” Nichols, Buona Donna Productions is focused on creating films,  programming and other media forums to enhance and enrich the lives of others through the exploration of complex issues that have an impact on their lives including race, class, gender, spirituality, sex and more. Through DIE, CRAZY, FAT, the duo takes a in depth look at physical and mental health, diet, body image and spirituality through the eyes of both themselves and six other women across a diverse spectrum of age, race, and marital status.

The event will begin with a cocktail reception to celebrate the completion of the documentary followed by the screening of the two hour long film.  The reception begins at 6pm followed by the screening at 8pm. DIE, CRAZY, FAT is a riveting documentary showcasing the raw human progressions and set backs of eight women on a quest to a healthier self through physical, mental, lifestyle and spiritual changes. During the transformation process, these women make on new choices, and testing different alternatives pertaining to health and diet. Along the way, some of the participants find themselves vacillating between what the experts define as healthy and what their own minds and bodies feel that healthy is resulting in conflicting beliefs on what has become accepted doctrine over the years and what they are now discovering for themselves. Documenting an emotional six week journey, DIE, CRAZY, FAT will undoubtedly make an indelible mark amongst women of all demographics and ethnicities.
