MEDIA ALERT: Miss Brooklyn Scholarship Organization Announces Date for the 2011 Competition

BROOKLYN, NY – SEPTEMBER 23RD, 2010Amaris Acosta, Executive Director of the Miss Brooklyn Scholarship Organization (www.missbrooklyn.org), announced today that the 2011 Miss Brooklyn and Brooklyn’s Outstanding Teen competitions will be held Saturday, October 9th at the Brooklyn Music School located at 126 Saint Felix Street in Fort Greene, Brooklyn.

The Miss Brooklyn pageant, which serves as one of the local preliminaries on the road to the Miss America crown, is a scholarship competition that is open to women ages 18 to 24 and teens ages 13 to 17 who meet the residency requirements of living, working or attending school in the borough of Brooklyn. The only requirement to compete is that each contestant must raise at least $100 for Miss America’s official platform, the Children’s Miracle Network.

Acosta is also debuting a new title, Miss County Queen, which is an open competition that will draw contestants from all over New York state. Both Miss Brooklyn and Miss County Queen will be crowned on October 9th.

The Miss Brooklyn pageant has had many successful results including Leigh-Taylor Smith (Miss Brooklyn 2008) who went on to become Miss New York and was the Third Runner Up at Miss America. The most recent Miss Brooklyn, Mallory Hagan, and Brooklyn’s Outstanding Teen, Joelle Bracco, placed first runner up in their respective divisions at the Miss New York pageant this past June.

Miss Brooklyn Scholarship Organization Teams with Applebee’s for the Flapjack Fundraiser

BROOKLYN, NY – AUGUST 26, 2010—What could be better on a Saturday morning that a nice plate of fluffy, hot pancakes? Well how about having Miss Brooklyn (www.missbrooklyn.org) pass you the maple syrup? Join Mallory Hagan, Miss Brooklyn 2010 and Joelle Bracco, Brooklyn’s Outstanding Teen, for the two-hour Flapjack Fundraiser on Saturday, September 25. Sponsored by Applebee’s, the event takes place at the eatery’s Atlantic Terminal (139 Flatbush Avenue  at Dekalb Avenue) location in Downtown Brooklyn. Proceeds will raise money for the scholarships that are given to be given to the winners of the upcoming Miss Brooklyn pageant this October.

“Applebee’s has always been considered a neighborhood favorite and its dedication to the local community is well known,” says Miss Brooklyn Executive Director, Amaris Acosta. “The Miss Brooklyn Organization hopes to accomplish the same by providing our hometown girls with the platform to serve the community through volunteerism, as well as the opportunity to earn scholarships to further their education and future goals.”

Serving both as a fundraiser and as a chance for the Brooklyn community to get to know  more about the titleholders and the pageant that is a local preliminary for the Miss America pageant, the breakfast event begins at  8 am and includes a menu of flapjacks, bacon, eggs and juice—an enticing Saturday morning meal. Miss Brooklyn and Brooklyn’s Outstanding Teen to Appear at Sunday’s Cyclone-Yankees Game

BROOKLYN, NY—JULY 22, 2010 — Back from a successful showing at the Miss New York pageant, Mallory Hagan, Miss Brooklyn 2010, and Joelle Bracco, Brooklyn’s Outstanding Teen, will be on deck at this Sunday’s (July 25) Brooklyn Cyclones game at MCU Park in Coney Island.

Mallory is slated to throw out the ceremonial first pitch while Joelle will be gracing spectators with her rendition of God Bless America. The game promises to be an exciting one as the Cyclones (the minor league team for the New York Mets) will be playing their fierce rivals, the Staten Island Yankees (minor league team for the Bronx Bombers). First pitch is at 5 PM.

Miss Brooklyn Scholarship Organization Has Strong Showing at State Pageant with First Runner Ups In Both the Miss and Teen Divisions

BROOKLYN, NY – JUNE 28, 2010— Amaris Acosta and the Miss Brooklyn Scholarship Organization (www.missbrooklyn.org) are sitting pretty after this weekend’s Miss New York pageant, the state preliminary for Miss America. Taking place at the State University of New York at Albany’s Performing Arts Center, Mallory Hagan, the current Miss Brooklyn, and Joelle Bracco, Brooklyn’s Outstanding Teen, both placed 1st Runner Up in their respective divisions, continuing a tradition of Top Five finishes for the borough. The winner of the Miss New York title was Claire Buffie, Miss Southeast New York while Alison Stroming, Miss Jubilee’s Outstanding Teen took the teen title.

“I am proud of Miss Brooklyn’s legacy,” says Amaris Acosta, the pageant’s executive director. “In the three years we have been back in the borough we have produced one Miss New York and top five finishes at the state level each year, cementing Brooklyn’s status as a powerhouse. I look forward to the continued growth and success of the organization, and could not be more excited to find more talent to showcase for the next year. “

Mallory and Joelle will continue their reigns as the Brooklyn titleholders appearing at various events throughout Brooklyn and New York City including an appearance at the July 25th Brooklyn Cyclones baseball game at MCU Park in Coney Island.

As for Amaris, she is already setting her sites on 2011 with preparation for the Miss Brooklyn pageant, The Outstanding Teen Pageant (for teens 13 to 17) and the reemergence of the Brooklyn Princess Pageant (open to girls ages 6 to 12) and a renewed push for the state title. “It’s Albany or Fuggetaboutit!”  says Acosta.
