HAITI: How you can help

The world sees the pleas for help coming from Haiti. Many have answered the call already through national and international relief organizations. But there are grassroots efforts springing up in communities all over the United States and across the world who are bringing the opportunities to help right to our front doors. Here’s a sampling of local, national and international groups that are answering Haiti’s cry for help. If you know of more organizations and groups doing something in your area, please let us know.

We plan on updating this listing on a weekly basis.

NATIONAL EFFORTS

THE CLINTON BUSH HAITI FUND
(Based in the United States)
Website: www.clintonbushhaitifund.org

The earthquake that rocked the coast of Haiti killed or injured a devastating number of people. Even more were left in need of aid, making this is one of the great humanitarian emergencies in the history of the Americas. In the aftermath of the disaster, President Barack Obama asked President Bill Clinton and President George W. Bush to raise funds for immediate relief and long-term recovery efforts to help those who are most in need of food, water, shelter, medical care, and support. In response, the two Presidents established the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund (CBHF) to identify and fulfill unmet needs in the region, foster economic opportunity, improve the quality of life of those affected over the long term, and assist the people of Haiti as they rebuild their lives and country. Presidents Clinton and Bush oversee the CBHF through their respective nonprofit organizations, the William J. Clinton Foundation and Communities Foundation of Texas. One hundred percent of the donations made to the Clinton Foundation go directly to relief efforts. Ninety-nine percent of the donations made to the Communities Foundation of Texas go directly to relief efforts.

THE AMERICAN RED CROSS

(Based in the United States)

Website: www.redcross.org

Since its founding in 1881 by visionary leader Clara Barton, the American Red Cross has been the nation’s premier emergency response organization. As part of a worldwide movement that offers neutral humanitarian care to the victims of war, the American Red Cross distinguishes itself by also aiding victims of devastating natural disasters. Over the years, the organization has expanded its services, always with the aim of preventing and relieving suffering… An average of 92 cents of every dollar the Red Cross spends is invested in humanitarian services and programs. The Red Cross is not a government agency; it relies on donations of time, money, and blood to do its work.
